Semiotics is the study of signs and sign processes.
- Semiotics & Structuralism
- Signs: signifiers & signified
- Syntagmatic & paradigmatic sign relations
- texts/iconic, indexical & symbolic signs/ denotative & connotative meaning
After viewing different types of semiotics and how to find them, I analysed Pink - Stupid Girls video and was amazed at the underlying semiotics. Everything from the clothing, to the environment had a second meaning.
Call of Duty 4 (banned xbox 360) Advert:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPZnu_hay5Q&feature=related
I have chosen to anaylse this advert, firstly because I am an xbox player myself and I wanted to see if I could notice different forms of semiotics in the way in which it is adverised; as I haven't noticed before.
The advert starts as a scene in a public place where men start holding whats made to look like handguns but is really there own hands. Firstly I noticed the use of gender, the Xbox itself may be open to both genders but the Call of Duty game however 'isn't'. Is this because its based around fighting and guns? Stereotypical gender types are used in this advert.
Secondly the advert is centered around the feeling when the player is in the 'zone', implying that its so realistic the player could be fighting themselves.
After 38seconds, the screen splits and one side is the real life people fighting and on the right is actual game. Is this sending the right message? The entire advert is based around the intense feeling one would get when playing this game, a feeling as though they are 'in' the game.
Its interesting how the use of males is a form of semiotics, and how the typical 'play' is often based around the use of guns etc.
